Although the controls take abit of getting used to and the graphics leave alot to be desired. Silent Hill is a great mix of creepy atmosphere, scary action and intriguing puzzels. Its a great game with a compelling story line and several different endings which gives the game good replay value. With next fear mode offering a further game ending. This is one of the games that started the survivel horror genre if you love these types of games you should play this and see how it all began.

I often strugle to find an exact term when describing Silent Hil as conventional language lacks the ability to accuaretly sum up this series. If you are a fan of the series as you no doubt have guessed I am, then you will probablly already know that this was the first installment of the now popular Silent Hill franchise, this title original came out for the Sony PlayStation in North America in 1999 and has been leaving people genuinely frightened ever since, well, frightened is a bit of an oversimplification as a mix match of emotions are felt, an almost rainbow of emotions from gut-wrenching anticipation to downright hand trembling, leaving you unable to turn away from the television leaving you with a feeling of constant dread. Silent Hill has been compared many times to other Survival Horror titles such as Resident Evil and Alone in the dark, however this is a lazy comparision as Silent Hill is far, far more than this, it is the intellectual seperior to these titles. Whilst the main stream rurvival horror genre has experienced a bit of a slump in recent years, the core fans of the Silent Hill series stand strong in the face of generic first person shooter clones and boring modern day titles like Call of Duty and Battlefield. The main thing that seperates Silent Hill from other titles even titles within it's own genre is that it concentrates heavily on physiological horror and immersive story telling, I found myself feeling really uneasy without being able to quite explain the exact source of my anxiety and with this the developers of this title "hit the nail on the head". One of the many key achivements in Silent Hill is it's unique approach to storyline and it's clever delivery of this, it stares traditional Hollywood story telling in the face and dares to do the opposite, you will constantly be guessing the outcome, keeping the player completely enthalled from start to fourth play through. I must point out that you should not expect to understand a tenth of the complete story even after completion, it takes at least two to three whole playthroughs to catch half of the philosophic and esoteric theme's cleverly hidden in it's story, This brings me to another fantastic element, a jewel in Silent Hill's figurative crown, traditionally Silent Hill titles have multiple endings, depending an your behaviour and/or choices you can influence the ending. Another factor helping Silent Hill achieve the appressive atmosphere that gamers have come to know and love is that of abosolutle stellar audio design, not only does the loud jarring music mixed with a very dark industrial sound echo the protaganist journey into his very own personal hell, it also provides the appropriate use of silence and softer tones to send the hairs on the back of your neck standing to attention. The long time series composer Akira Yamaoka simply cannot be beaten in terms of music and audio production, he litterally has no equal in the survival horror genre. This particular title encapsulates everything that is good about Silent hill from storyline to music and everything inbetween, the criticism is easily made that by this generation's standards, the graphics in this title are lacking that HD sheen, but if primal fear and mind numbingly awesomeness is what you seek, then this is a small price to pay, look no further Silent Hill is litterally the best in it's genre and is quite literally in a class of it's own.Read full review
