This film is underrated. I've always been surprised that while the soundtrack sells at nearly thirty pounds the movie itself gets about a tenth of that. Certainly in BluRay format the sound is fantastic both the music and effects. This movie asks questions about the nature of war in a world that has gone beyond war as a desperate battle for technical dominance (hence piston power is the norm here, no jets although the aircraft are frequently pushers with the airscrews where jets would be) and now regards it as a sporting contest between manufacturers. Not that the casualties aren't real, aircraft get shot down and pilots die. We follow the career at one base of one such pilot. Starting as a blank slate he soon comes to terms with his existence.... But what precisely are the "kildren" as these pilots are called? They never grow old, usually die in the sky and exist purely for the moment, booze, bowling and bawdiness.... what indeed. By the end of the movie you'll know. And be glad its just a movie.Read full review
