Although it is fiction, this book highlights the plight of the Windrush generation, and provokes a lot of thought regarding the way black people were, and in some cases still are, being treated. It also brings out how cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings between different cultures, and how intolerant and ignorant people can be towards these differences. Despite covering some very sad and anger- provoking scenarios, there is a great deal of laugh-out loud humour in the book, which lightens it enormously. It is not a can't-put-it down book, but it is a book that I did want to keep going back to; a quiet read that I wanted to keep reading. The end came unexpectedly though- I wanted to know more!

I loved this book for its attempt at insights about how immigrants and the British came to live together after World War 2. Prejudice was bad but not universally. Living with difference was relatively new in Britain apart from perhaps the huge prejudice against the Irish. The book follows the lives of a handful of characters and we see things through their eyes. I would recommend it.

I loved this story, for it's great characters - funny, sad, heartbreaking, and for revealing a part of our history that I new little of. The storyline grabbed me and I couldn't wait to pick it up again after each session. Post war Britain and immigration, a story tellers cookie jar.

A well written account in the form of a novel highlighting the difficulties and obstacles faced by the new arrivals from the Caribbean in coming to a society geared to the ambitions and priorities of a white indigenous population in the UK.
