If filled me with sadness & anger to read that these houses ( no doubt beloved by their ancestral owners)were almost stolen from them. The government imposed punishing death duties, taxes & then not only did donating these to the NT meant giving them a substantial endowment for future upkeep. To add insult to injury they were permitted to live in a small part of their houses if they paid a ‘nominal’ rent?! This just sounds like communist Russia rather England, & whenever I visit these houses I always feel the house must remember the good old days when they had their own families & the life of the house has changed drastically & not for the better. A stately home without its family is a sad relic no matter how well looked after, waif like. Sigh...

Fascinating little book written in an idiosyncratic style and providing an insight into the lives of those owning country houses as that time. A real gem of a book. I couldn't put it down and just wish it had been longer.
