A well priced compact wide aperture fixed prime lens. The lens is the older Minolta design but with better coatings for digital use. The results as you would expect from a prime lens is excellent. Auto focus is fast. Most buyers tend to go for zoom lenses. The lens does not have the flexibility of a zoom, but it has a wide apreture, much better optics and perfect for out of focus backgrounds. Personally, I prefer prime lenses to zooms.
Difficult at first to get to grips with the large f-stop in my picture taking and DOF. But once mastered, it's ace.
Every photography enthusiast should have a 50mm prime. This is a fantastic lens great for low light and portrait shooting. This is about double the expense of the sony 50mm f1.8 however the build quality is far far superior and image quality is also much improved. Another benefit of this lens is it can be used on full frame sensors so if you're currently using a crop sensor and upgrade your camera to a full frame sensor you don't have to buy a new 50mm prime. If you are using a crop sensor the actual focal length is around 75-80mm. lenses unlike camera bodies hold their value extremely well and a great lens like this will still be a great lens in 10 years time. The bokeh achieved is very pleasing and allows creative shooting. The auto focus sound is noticeably louder than a SAM lens but for me this isn't an issue.Read full review
This is a great lens: crisp, fast & quiet focussing (on my sony a55), very fast - indoor photos no problem in normal light, excellent for portrait shots, depth of field variation with f stops v. good. Best fixed focal length lens I have used in several decades of amateur photography. Even better if you can pick it up at around half price with little use, as I did!
