The WM-D6C is more of a symbol of an era and a testament to how well one can make something if one setts ones mind to it, rather than just a cassette recorder. The fact that SONY continued to produce and sell this powerful little machine for almost 20 years speaks for itself. It would be grossly unfair to treat it in a review like any other piece of consumer electronics one buys and plays with. I bought my 1st WM-D6C in 1984, a couple of years after they first came out, for just over £200. The WM-D6C was selling for about £250 still in 2002 when they finally stopped the production. I sold mine to a friend the same year for £350 (the price offered - not asked), because he badly wanted to have one and could not buy it in any store. The WM-D6C is a compact, heavy little machine that fitts in a hand perfectly, or inside a coat pocket. It can be dropped, many times, and still work. The tape drive mechanism is robust and will not jam (unless you feed it with useless cheap tape). The reproduction of challanging musical pieces in a top notch Hi-Fi system can be nothing short of breathtaking but, it excells in mid-range and voice reproduction. I have just been listening to some tapes I made in 1992 on my WM-D6C recording from vynil and a very good turntable/cartridge combination on a TDK AD tape - it is still amazingly good. And yes, I was listening to it on my new WM-D6C which I bought on eBay recently. I just had to have it again. In fact I bought several (just in case). They do not make them like that any more .........Read full review
The value of this product is not just the drive belt, but also the instructions. The instructions gave me the confidence to replace the drive belt myself--something I would never have attempted without their help. The steps are clear, the pictures make all the difference (there are plenty of them, showing the different steps--and also included are some warning without which I would have springs shooting across the room and tiny screws all over the floor. An excellent purchase, can't rate highly enough.

When in good working order, these professional quality cassette recorders are capable of superb sound reproduction. Due to their age they suffer from internal drive belt rubber degradation. Replacement of these belts is difficult because the recorders have to be stripped down in order to gain access. Not a job for the inexperienced. Also the replacement drive belts need to be of good quality.
