Warner Bros. attempted to revitalize its animation division with this family adventure that blended live action and animation in the style of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), reportedly coming in with a price tag of 100 million. Basketball legend Michael Jordan stars as himself, a retired sports hero trying his hand at baseball and failing miserably. Meanwhile, the Looney Tunes gang, led by Bugs Bunny, are kidnapped by aliens called the Nerdlucks. It seems that the Nerdlucks' theme park, Moron Mountain (a barely-veiled dig at Disney) is failing to attract customers. The space invaders are convinced that the appearance of Bugs and his pals Porky Pig and Speedy Gonzalez will beef up business. Bugs makes his captors a deal -- they'll play a game of basketball for their freedom. When the Nerdlucks stack the deck by pilfering the talent of NBA superstars Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing, the Warner Bros. heroes enlist the aid of Jordan, who returns to the court to help the classic characters. While he prepares to play, Jordan is aided by fellow celebrity Bill Murray. Director Joe Pytka previously created many of the television commercials that featured Jordan as a paid endorser. Karl Williams, All Movie Guide I love the movie and was my favourite childhood movie.Read full review
As a cynical exercise in franchise exploitation this live-action/animated feature takes some beating; as a film, its target audience appears to be child fans of the cartoon characters' live-action co-star, basketball player Michael Jordan. Realising he doesn't get a penny from the spin-off toys owned by Jordan's kids, Bugs Bunny considers getting a better agent. To revive his ailing Moron Mountain theme park, Swackhammer dispatches his minions, the Nerdlucks, to Looney Tunes Land, to kidnap Bugs, Daffy Duck, Wile E Coyote, et al. To save their skins, the Looney Tunes challenge their would-be abductors to a game of basketball, whereupon the Nerdlucks transform themselves into their fearsome alter egos, the Monstars, before siphoning off the ball-playing skills from a bunch of NBA stars. To even up the odds, Bugs and Co kidnap Jordan and beg him to lick them into shape for the big game. The set plays are transparently simple, the execution sloppy and the ending signposted days in advance. Visually, it's a mess: the attempts to blend 2- and 3-D animation with live-action and computer-generated images produce scenes that are fuzzier than the storylineRead full review
I am a person who thrives on the effort put into arts of all kinds, what i can say is that space jam is an excelent example of just that kind of effort what i mean is that WB went to a huge amount of effort to bring looney tunes to the big screen, redesigning characters and introducing the unsung heroen of the movie (Lola Bunny) who became more popular than WB could ever imagine.WB wanted to make shure it was better than who framed rodger rabit. i won't go into too much detail as the previos reveiwers have done a great job in giving you the general plot line. when space jam was advertised on tv it turned into the number 1 kids movie of the year drivin by the succes of BOOMERANG the popular kids tv channel showing looney tunes. grab yourself a bargin and add this to your collection now for like all the other looney tunes cartoons it will turn into a timeless classic that kids in the future will benafit from. Space jam has a definite improvement from rodger rabit on the effects side of things however not definite enough from the 8 yr technology gap a space jam made in 1996 (rodger rabit made in 1988)Sorry WB but maybe real life and cartoon will never mix properly (I hope it can!!) this is the reason for the GOOD instead of excelent rating. DESPITE THAT THIS IS A CRACKING MOVIE WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!! similar movies (Looney Tunes back in action) (Who framed rodger rabit) thank you for reading!Read full review
Space jam is one of those movies, which is so beautifully made its one of those movies you just have to watch. With a mixture of carton and real-life footage, Space jam just blows you away, the special effects are out of this world and with a cast line up of Michael Jordon, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and more... Space jam will prove to be the best intertaining film you would want to see over and over again.
