This is great early Elmore Leonard. He's often ranked among the great american crime writers. Less gratuitous than James Elroy, and less hyperbole than Hiassan, the prose is slick, with understated humour, and weirdly rounded characters, given their illustrated through dialogue. This is one of my preferred early Leonard offerings. Worth a few quid for holiday kicks

A well written and entertaining crime novel with compelling characters, nice plot twists, and historically correct, but in no way politically correct, portrayals of language and attitudes of the time, that some modern sensibilities may find offensive.
