A lovely kit of the Mossie. The fit is exceptionally good, as you might expect from Tamiya and the detail crisp. The cockpit sidewall is maybe a bit too simplified for this day and age, but when you remember the kit was first released in 1999, it still holds its own. There is some debate as to whether the fin/rudder is too tall (around 1mm, if memory serves) but otherwise, the kit is accurate. There's a good range of stores provided, with 50 gal tanks, four 500lb bombs (though only two are required) and eight rockets. It would have been nice to have the option to open up the bomb doors to show off the otherwise spare bombs. The kit has other options too, including plain and spoked wheel hubs, shrouded or unshrouded exhausts and "needle" and paddle bladed propellers. Three marking options are provided, though Tamiya's decals have never been their high point, being thick and somewhat unyielding. Strong decal solution may well help here. The only other annoyance is the ejector pin marks on the cockpit sidewalls. Both on this kit and the B.IV/PR.IV there are multiple and prominent pin marks that are a pain to deal with, as filling/sanding these is awkward at best. Arguably though, the Tamiya Mosquito family is still the one to beat in 1/72 scale, especially as they can frequently be had for less than £20.Read full review
