This is a live recording of a performance Taste (Rory Gallagher; gtr & vcls, Richie McCracken; bass, John Wilson; drums) did in 1971 at Montreux Casino in Switzerland. It's a raw & ragged example of the British (& Irish) style of blues which was being widely performed at the time. The sound the band produce is not really that of authentic blues musicians, it's more a sort of proto-heavy rock, raucous & frantic; no poise & no restraint. Many of the tunes go on way too long, the passages of improvisation seem to run out of ideas long before they end. On the other hand, there is a sort of naive intensity which seems to inform these performances. The record is very much an artifact of its time. Its appeal may lie in that very fact, and in the sheer (often misdirected) energy it embodies. I don't know what happened to McCracken & Wilson, but I think Gallagher improved enormously as his career progressed. His playing became much more assured on later records (unlike his singing, which remained a sort of gruff, un-musical bark). Perversely, I rather like it, but it's a record you should only buy if you're not labouring under the illusion that it's a forgotten masterpiece. It's not that. It's a rough & ready live gig by a journeyman blues-rock band. You can almost smell the beer, the sweat & the cigarette smoke (maybe not just cigarettes!) Track listing: 1. Sugar Mama (Chester 'Howlin' Wolf' Burnett) 2. Gamblin' Blues (Jackson) 3. I Feel So Good (Big Bill Broonzy)* 4. Catfish Blues (Robert Petway) 5. Same Old Story (Rory Gallagher) * Note: There's only 5 tracks on the album even though on some versions the sleeve says there's 6 (with 'I Feel So Good Parts 1 & 2'). In fact there's no gap between Parts 1 & 2. It's just one song.Read full review

Superb Playing By Rory and co..It's great to hear a Live recording when A band can Play so well..Tight but loose.. .Not quite as good as Isle of Wight cd..But delivers the raw power That made Taste So special.... Those were the days Indeed..check it out..
I had been looking to get this album for quite a long time, as I used to have it on vinyl, and used to play it a lot. I was really pleased when I found it on ebay, and looked forward to receiving and playing it. It arrived promptly, but I was disappointed to find that the recording has a lot of background hiss on it, and you have to turn the treble right down to try and blank it out. When I reported it to the seller, he said "I don't know what you want me to say really, I just sell them, I don't record them!" An apology, and an offer of money back would have been nice,(and a legal requirement).I would have still kept the CD, just a shame that customer service, is a swear word at this vendors shop!.
