Okay, let me start by stating that I am a BIG Tenacious D fan. However, in the interest of providing a balanced review, I shall take an unbiased view at this DVD Release. The Band Tenacious D (or "The D" as they are sometimes referred to), consist of Jack Black (from movies such as Shallow Hal, Orange County and High Fidelity), and Kyle Gass (from Idle Hands, Shallow Hal, Elf). The duo met, and Kyle taught Jack Black to play guitar, and Tenacious D were formed. For years, they played in festivals and as support acts across the USA - although for a long time they only had one song... "Tribute". Their Music In their own words, they would describe their music as "Accoustic Rock" - a term which I totally agree with, although "Comedy Rock" would be equally as appropiate. If you have ever seen them on Televison, or have been lucky enough to have seen them live, you will know what I mean. They enjoy their music, they enjoy making their fans happy and they enjoy having a laugh. It has been argued for many years that a group who do not take themselves seriously could not produce great music. Tenacious D set out to prove this wrong and this DVD shows how successful they have been. The DVD "Tenacious D - The Complete Masterworks" is a double DVD. Disk one consists of the live gig the duo performed at The Brixton Academy in November 2002. It contains 15 live tracks, with hilarious comedy skits in between the songs. If you have heard the album, you will know most of the songs, but to hear them performed live, with just two guys on acoustic guitars is something else. There are also many performances, such as a spoof "Don't fear the reaper" act - (as Jack Black says, it doesn't sound right without the Cowbell). The better known tracks such as Tribute and Wonderboy come across brilliantly, and the atmosphere of the crowd adds to the performance. Sadly, small segements of the show have been cut from the DVD. There is no explanation why, and no reason as far as I know. I was fortunate to be at the gig, and every second of the show was worthy to have been included. The shortfall is minimal however, and is compensated by the inclusion of six television episodes that Tenacious D made for American TV station, HBO. Each episode tracks the progress of the band, from the early days to their first road trip. The programs are fairly short (about 20 mins each), but have some very funny moments in. Disk two is labelled "for psycho fans only" - is this some kind of warning ? Well, I think that psycho is a bit strong - broad mindedness, sick sense of humor and a strong stomach are essential. This disk starts with some short films - "JB's BJ", "Rock Stars Sperm For Sale" and "Butt Baby" - the titles say enough. These were shot and directed by Liam Lynch (known for his "Whatever" song). Fans at the gig will remember two of these from the intervals. There are also three TV appearances on the DVD - MADTV, in which the band perform "Tribute" with Dave Grohl on the drums (well worth seeing), Crank Yankers which seems to be an adult version of The Muppets, but has a brilliant version of "Friendship". The third is from Late Night With Conan O' Brien, in which they perform a live version of Wonderboy. Then, there are two "Behond The Scenes" documentarys - "On The Road" and "In The Studio". Despite these being fairly long, you never loose interest as Jack Black and Kyle Gass's comments and humor has you laughing all the way through the proceedings.Read full review
