I am a fan of the author; I have read nearly everything he's had in print, and have enjoyed the resurrected John Lange titles, noting their range of styles from Clive Cussler style adventure, James Hadley Chase style tough crime thriller, and the author's own proto- Westworld "Drug of Choice". The Venom Business, however reads like a story caught somewhere between James Bond and Jason King; Dallas and Crossroads. The overlong story begins promisingly enough, then gets lost in a mush of tedious subplots, and the main act's setting in rainy London at the fag-end of the 60s is a depressing comedown from the tropical glamour earlier in the tale. I finished the book not caring if any of the characters lived or died, and was glad when the rushed ending hove into view. If this was a movie, it would be from 1970 , feature Alex Cord, Richard Johnson and Anoushka Hempel, would be badly dubbed , feature a music score by Gong, and would crop up on the moviesformen free view channel regularly. Just saying. This should be cut from the Crichton canon.Read full review
