Alan Watts is a fantastic writer. If you have ever read any of his books, this is more of the same incredible ability to explain the history of Zen and its current influence in Eastern culture in a way very accessible to the Western reader. I would recommend reading his 'Book on the taboo against knowing who you are' first if you haven't already. I felt a lot more confident identifying wiith some of the ideas expressed in this book having already become familiar with Eastern philosophy with that title; it gives a good foundation.
