Simon Scarrow's Eagle series is just a brilliant read. 13 books down in record time for me, just starting the next Britannia. The first seven books deal with a young 16 yr old Cato, a former bookish slave of the Emperor Claudius who at request of his dying, favoured, former slave father who had already been set free. Claudius sets Cato free on condition he joins the Legions. To further aid Cato he makes him a Centurion! Centurions, such as recently promoted Macro usually are grizzled 15 year battle hardened veterans. Cato clearly isn't after some hard basic recruit training Cato ends up with Macro. During a fight with the Gauls Cato saves Macros life as well as teach him how to read and write a skill Macro must have to keep his rank as Centurion. They then begin the invasion of the dreaded Britannia, the two by now are firm friends Macro as much a father figure as friend. Cato from his early beginnings shows Macro his leadership qualities with Cato still in awe of his friend. Carractacus the British king is a thorn in the side of Rome long after Emperor Claudius has declared Britannia defeated. And he would be for over ten years leading Cato and Macro plenty of time to serve in the deserts of Judea where the Death of the troublesome prophet Jesus had recently been crucified then to Egypt, Rome and back to Britannia ( so far) The two seem very reminiscent of senior NCOs of the British Army in their approach to command to me. It's the only way I can think to describe them. Anyway darn good read. Start at the beginning of the series and work through .Read full review
