Bought this on Ebay as, strangely, it is not available for rent from LoveFilm. Read the book and later decided to see the film. Sadly, this does not reflect a decent copy of the book's plot. There is so much more in the book that could have been included to make it a five star. If you haven't read the book, the film may entertain you. If you have read the book, forget it....
Story: A group of girls seek adventure on a caving expedition. Deep inside underground caves they find themselves cut off from the world and off the map. Battling to get back to the surface they realize that they are being hunted by an unknown cannibalistic force. Now they must pull together and fight for their very survival. Comments: I first thought that this was going to be some sort of '' The Blair Witch Project '' as you seen in the previews & on the DVD menu, but thankfully ( didn't like '' the blair witch project '' ) that wasn't the case. The beginning is a bit boring when a mom looses her husband & daughter in a car-accident, but as soon as they start to '' descent '' into the cave, the movie hits off like a bullet! Great creature/monster effects from prehistoric neantherthalmen who have evolved into a sort of man/bat human being who see present day-humans just as food and eager for a meal! Really gory parts just like in '' Land Of the dead '' where they start eating you alive, terrific action shots when they start to explore the never-before ( except for 1 human, about 100 years ago ) cave and all women, now who wants more then that :) Very realistically shot, with modern clothes, actors/actresses, not really famous ones, so you get more of a realistic feeling in the movie, as if you are watching a home-video or something. The end rather suxed in my opinion, 1 girl manages to escape after deliberately disabling a friend of hers, then awakes as if she had a dream and still is MILES underground. There was 1 shot where i yelled out loud '' wow, what a mega-bitch! ( as in positive sense ) '' where she was killing all those creatures with a climbers-axe. Quite simply one of the best scary movies you can get. There are bits that you find hard to beleive in, the finger tip climbing upside etc, but as the film builds it becomes VERY tense and makes you jump. On a par with the Grudge, Shining and Blair Witch for tension and making you jump. Its starts with a bang and has a completley unexpected ending. A must for scary movie lovers. The sequal comes out next year, which is also rumoured to be as good as this one. Its now in my top 10 for horror flicks.
I am a MASSIVE horror movie fan, the cheesier, gorier and more over the top the better. But it is not often i watch a film that actually scares me. This film starts off with a group of women going caving. Unusual in itself because normally in horror films women are only good for falling over, hurting their ankles and getting munched on by something. They could have actually in my opinion made a whole film revolved around this because the sense of claustrophobia and panic the director manages to portray are quite terrifying. It is lit using only the casts head torches so it is very dark and eerie. It is after things start to majorly wrong for the women that they realise they are not alone in the dark... avsolutely brilliant performances from all involved and i would recommend this film to anyone who loves a good scare! 5 stars and two big thumbs up!Read full review
Excellent British horror from Dog Soldiers director Neil Marshall. Highly recommended for any fans of gory, grisly horror!
