A very powerful description of the intrigues within the Catholic Church in France at the time of Cardinal Richelieu, resulting in the framing and destruction of a liberal priest. Based on the novel by Aldous Huxley, The Devils of Loudon, the film is a largely factual account of events, which prompted demonstrations outside cinemas when it was released, by people who didn’t want its contents to be available to the public. This film by maverick director Ken Russell is very engaging, extremely harrowing, nauseating in parts and may make you want to hide behind the sofa. Catholics may feel offended.

Still causing controversy after 50 years. I absolutely loved this Ken Russel film and always will. Oliver Reed and company knocked it out of the park. Superb.

An interesting and challenging story, based on true events, it speaks out for the need to challenge when needed, even if those that need to be challenged are those in authority. As is so often the case, authority is often abused and used for the wrong purposes.
