Whether you know a lot about the English Civil War, or whether you know nothing at all, this is a book to read. It takes an unstuffy approach to the subject, painting the period through the lives of people involved - not just the leaders but (more tellingly) ordinary folk who recorded the times in their letters and daybooks.

To be fair I'm only two chapters in BUT Dr. Purkiss does set-up a very well reseached 'back-drop' and character sketches of the ordinary people of the ECW events as well of course the major players viz. King Charles very unhappy/ sickly childhood with bullying, a weird distant antagonistic father and the equally or more complex Oliver Cromwell. I hope to settle into this book as keenly as I did DR. Tristram Hunt's book in 2007-8 when we were preparing re-enactments of the 1647 Putney Debates. Insights from contempoarary writings and letters.
