Although the Oxford History of England series is now very dated, the fifteen volumes are still worth reading if, like me, you enjoy narrative history which is written in grammatically correct English and in a lucid style. This volume covers the violent period of the Wars of the Roses from the usurpation of Henry IV to the death of Richard III. Attention is paid to more than the political context and the many battles, as the suthor, E.F. Jacob, discusses developments in religion and life in the town and countryside. The final chapter deals with the peaceful arts (e.g. poetry, printing, music and philosophy), a welcome relief after the preceding violent episodes recorded.
