Firstly if you haven't read the 'new sun' books by Gene Wolfe - start there. They are epic, and truly masterworks. 5th Head of Cerberus is a book of 3 short stories (set in the same universe as each other). As such, although the stories have some inter-link - the flow of the reading is compromised, making it a less than compelling read. I would reccomend the book, but be prepared for a bit of a slog, despite the relatively few pages of the novel. Finally, the second story, involving an alien indigenous race. Here, the writing is genuinely 'alien' in nature. It really helped to create the alien experience the author clearly intended. Once again though, the strange nature of the writing made the pages turn at a painfully slow pace. I would buy the book again, but definitely not the type of novel I'd want as a sole form of entertainment on a plane journey!Read full review
