A story about a Chinese Malay woman sent with her sister by the Japanese in WW2 to a camp in the Malay hills. She is the only survivor of the camp and wants to build a garden in memory of her sister. After training as a barrister in England she returns to Malaysia and approaches a Japanese garden designer living in the Cameron Highlands. He refuses to design her garden but teaches her to do it herself. There is much more to the story, but I don't want to spoil it for those still to read it. I learnt a lot about Malaya / Malaysia during the war and the following years, a little about Japanese garden design and its history. This is all painlessly woven into the story of Yu Ling and Arimoto. This is a beautifully written book about trying to forget, yet not wanting to forget; about revenge and compromise and dealing with anger.
