I remember seeing this movie for the first time many years ago, it has stayed with me ever since. The Haunting has to be one of the best films ever made about a haunted house. The four main characters played by Richard Johnson, Russ Tamblyn, Claire Bloom & Julie Harris are a superb cast, playing their parts so well. The movie was filmed in b/w to add to the atmosphere, I don't think colour would do the film justice. No actual ghosts appear, it is all done with lighting effects & noises to make the house what it is. The house itself was well chosen, it just looks a place that you could imagine to be haunted. The place used was Ettington Park Hotel, which is in Warwickshire England & not the States where it is set. Yes a great film that I could watch over & over again!

I love this classic horror film it's definitely one of my all time favourites. It is positively chilling and in my opinion the scariest film I've ever watched. There is no blood or gore but it is full of suspense & things to make you jump. The atmosphere is enhanced by the fact it is black & white. If you are a horror fan it is a must see film!

This is just simply an absolutely brilliant film from start to finish. Direction by Robert Wise is absolutely faultless, cinematography & lighting by Davis Boulton is gorgeous whilst the music score by Humphrey Searle helps raise the tension (if that's possible) to new heights of dread. All the cast to a sterling job, however, extra praise must be given to Julie Harris & Claire Bloom both of whom are outstanding. If you only ever see one 'Haunted House' film then this is the one. My rating :- 10 "The Haunting" (1963). Forget about the remake, absolute drivel. You might want to check out "The Legend of Hell House" 1973 starring Roddy McDowall & Gayle Hunnicutt, directed by John Hough.

One of my favourite films, and I still struggle to watch it on my own because it creeps me out. Excellent ensemble cast, superb camera work and direction, this film is a classic.
