The author, F G Cottam, has written some very compelling novels and this is one of his best. The House of Lost Souls is best read during autumn or winter as it is a novel that make you want to read more and be involved in the story. Paul Seaton, the central character, is a trouble soul with a fondness for Bushmills Irish whisky, but is also a dogged investigator. The plot involves real characters such as Dennis Wheatley and Aleister Crowley who were involved in black magic. No spoilers here as the plot is a mixture of flashbacks and a character named Pandora Gibson-Hoare who was an avant garde photographer. Highly recommended and to use that hackneyed phrase 'a page-turner'.
