I have been watching the reruns of MASH and realised that I really didn't know that much about the Korean conflict I visited South Korea in 1985 and thought it would be interesting to see what incidents in the conflict happened in places I visited This book is very detailed and presents a good neutral description of the 'police action '

I was born around the time of the Korean War and always wanted to know what it was all about. I'm pleased I started with this book because it told me everything I wanted to know. Max Hastings, or Sir Max as he is now, is a very informative writer and tells the story of the US fight to stop the Russians expanding in Asia. As it turned out they ignored the threat of the Chinese and that was the start of a 3-year conflict that swung one way, then the other and back again until it ended where they started. I'm pleased I bought it and can't wait to buy some of his other books.
As the Guardian newspaper said "The best narrative history of the Korean conflict." And I agree. All other books about the Korean War hang on to this and, if Korean modern history is your interest, you will be doing yourself a huge favour by starting with this. It pulls no punches and shows no bias.
