I bought this at the request of my 8 year-old son who had read it at school during their WW2 topic. I hadn't read it so was keen to see why he liked it. It's the story of an evacuee (Lenny) who was sent to a country house (based on Parham House in Storrington, West Sussex) and how he deals with life in the country away from his mum with other children. We visited the house where it was based, and searched for Lions and Unicorns and found plenty, which really enhanced the whole learning experience for him, and was fascinating for me. As usual, Shirley Hughes does a great job writing a sympathetic compelling story for children, and the illustrations are perfect.
