When this was put forward as a suggestion at our book club, I was a bit hesitant. I struggle with horror books as I just don't find them scary. I need the music, the creepy dark rooms and the atmosphere from films; I don't think you really get that from a book. However one of the women at the group said she was the same but there was something creepy about this book. I would agree with that, the scary scenes certainly do put you a little on edge. Waters is brilliant at making such vivid descriptions and whilst I wasn't scared as such, there was a definite hint of goosebumps. However the scary scenes were very few and far between; a handful of pages if that. The book therefore became something else for me; it was all about the characters and their interactions with each other. It was a long book but it didn't feel long, it was just so full of interesting details. Thinking back we don't really see many other characters, it mainly concentrates on Dr Faraday and the residents of Hundreds Hall but is never dull. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to discuss it at book club.Read full review

Brilliant storytelling, she is such a great writer she is able to evoke a time gone by so well that you completely loose yourself in that era. Genuinely compelling and at times very creepy, i was spooked several times !!

Very well written book but certainly not as scary as reviews stated. 1 chapter left to read so perhaps it will live up to the hype at last!

For fans of old fashioned ghost stories, I could not recommend this enough. I would liken it to Henry James' 'The Turn Of The Screw' in the way that you can approach it from different angles and interpret the action in several ways. I will not elaborate story wise so as not to spoil the read but, be warned, it is a tale that refuses to leave your conciousness even when the last page is turned.
in the age of digital books, it is refreshing to actually turn pages
