Purchased in the belief it would contain all ex tracks in the uk ever laid. Not so. Primarily I was looking for inspiration for flat ex railway routes but now paths and bridleways, to start a journeys via cycle. Gradients on ex tracks are very kind for the novice cyclist so I was utterly disappointed when I found there were no references at all to West Yorkshire and the Great Northern Railway, no references to Cullingworth and Wilsden Stations and the Great Northern walking trail passing over Hewenden Viaduct. As the cover says '' featuring railway walks and cycle paths''. I suspect this book has not been written with West Yorkshire in mind. Had the book been written before the track had been converted to trail I wondered. It says 2010 in the cover. That makes the trail older and in my book fit for inclusion.Read full review

I bought this without the benefit of reading a review, but, having other Julian Holland railway books, I was sure that this would be safe to buy! I was right. This is a book to cherish - wonderful 'then and now' pictures, very relevant historical facts, details of current practical information. Used in conjunction with OS maps one can plan some excellent 'days out', whether walking or cycling along the old railway routes. It is a large book, too big for the average bookshelf, and would need a purpose-built glove box to carry it in your car! (I keep a large plastic container/box in my car & camper-van that holds all my relevant guide books, maps, etc.). 256 pages of excellent railway information. A quality publication as well.
