London 1999 - I noticed red buses with a massive advert down the side saying… The Matrix. They were on a black background and the words were made up of green numbers which was certainly eye-catching at the time. This was the first time I had ever heard of this new film and wondered what it was. Very little information was available until the film came out and the reviews were ecstatic. So I had to go, obviously. This is by far Keanu Reeves’s greatest film. He plays Neo, a run-of-the-mill computer coder who stumbles on the biggest ever secret in the world. Soon enough he meets Morpheus played by the talented Laurence Fishburne who teaches him what he needs to know. And what he needs to know can change and save everything you have ever known in your existence. Joe Pantoliano is very cool in this, he’s such a smooth actor. The black graphics with green numbers continue throughout the film and it never abates its excitement for over two hours. This film won special effects awards which heralded a new era at the time as it was just before CGI became ubiquitous. This is one of those films where you actually sit up and listen, it’s a game changer. Read full review
