Directed by the Wachowski brothers ( now transgender sisters), The Matrix is a stunning blend of amazing special effects and a thought provoking ambitious plot. The film spawned a trio of less than impressive sequels, with Resurrections in particular being a massive disappointment, but the original remains a sci-fi masterclass and will probably still be enjoyed in 50 years time. Joshua Clover, a communist academic, delves deeper into the philosophy and meaning behind the film - is it a religious parable ( featuring Trinity and The One), or about the underclass rising up against their oppressors ( the Matrix is Marx +IT), Kung Fu Vs Robots ( inspired by animé and Hong Kong movies) or an expensive special effects filled action movie for philosophy students ( who have heard of Jean Baudrillard, Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida) ? Actually, Dr Clover concludes, The Matrix is really about the year 1999, and draws interesting parallels with the movie Office Space. The fascinating documentary A Glitch In The Matrix is highly recommended. This BFI Classic is a very slim volume, beautifully designed and will inspire you to rewatch the movie to understand it more.Read full review
