Two best friends - straight woman Abbie (Madonna), and gay man Robert (Rupert Everett)- decide to have a child together. Five years later, Abbie falls in love with a straight man (Benjamin Bratt) and wants to move away with him and Robert's little boy, Sam. Subsequently a nasty, full-of-surprises custody battle ensues. This film is a disappointment considering it was directed by John ("Midnight Cowboy", "Far From The Maddening Crowd") Schlesinger, although this is down to the poor screenplay and Madonna's acting. For some reason Madonna chooses to do the worst genre of films for a bad actress - comedies. She gave her character a job to suit herself rather than adapt to the character, which shows what a great actress she is! Madonna is neither likeable or funny in this film, despite Rupert Everett's efforts (and he IS a good actor) with her and the duff script. The exhaustive plot is full of gay issues, which is a pity because the plot should really centre around two people that have a child together and then split, not the sexuality issue. It's a shame that this bad film was the last from such a good director before he died in 2003. The soundtrack isn't bad though, so I'd recommend the CD instead.Read full review
This film is a lovely, funny, enjoyable yet quite emotional film all at the same time. Madonna claimed bad criticism for this film, yet everyone that I know that has seen it think its a really good film and that Madonna did not receive a fair go. The Partnership between her and Rupert Everret and the friendship that they show in this love story between a woman and her gay best friend is an excellent replica of how alot of Gay men share a friendship with a woman. I would recommend this movie to anyone and not just Madonna fans which it seems are they only people to see it.
mother will be happy she loves this film she has been looking for it in shops for weeks no make that years
