This is a book that is packed with wonderful images. The author has an incredible imagination! It is a sensory journey into the story that pulled me in with every chapter

A good idea, but the writer wasn't up to the job of making it work. Wooden, lacked vibrancy and sensuousness. Prim, characters 2-dimensional, boy were the protagonists boring! Dialogue clunky. If you are creating an alternative reality, you have to make it real within itself so the reader can trust it and become immersed in it. I lost faith with it round about when the opponents realised who they were, and didn't finish it. And humourless! Why not some humour, dirt, sex, food? - anything to give us links of experience, things we can use to bridge into the imaginary world? Rothfuss, Luis Zafon, Allende, Marlon James - spring to mind as authors who would have made a much better job.

Not quite as good as cracked up to be, light frothy and fun. And of course original. As an adult Harry Potters later books and those of CS Lewis are better. Still a good read
