After many years being familiar with evolution and its theories, I finally decided to go to the source and read the original text which expounded and explained the theory. A careful and thorough text is aimed at the lay-reader with little in the way of technical jargon. A glossary at the back helps with any difficulties. It is amazing how Darwin carefully introduces a principle, sites many examples in nature which supports it, and then gives a good account of the various refutations that could be made against it, dealing with each point in turn. One has to remember that this was the first time these theories were being put forward. and Darwin's integrity in explaining and accommodating criticisms is remarkable. He gives full credit to other workers in the field, including Russell of course, and here and there where he is not quite right with the benefit of 150 years of development, one wishes one could reach back to him and aquaint him with the discoveries of modern genetics and other discoveries which he would have embraced; it would have been the final piece in his jigsaw. The writing style is a little pedantic and heavy, as I suppose it had to be giving the pioneering nature of the work, and will not be read at a single go. Time and again one is impressed with the sheer integrity of the man. Glad I have it on my shelvesRead full review

This is not a light reading book. If you are not interested in biology it will be very boring for you... Many scientific terms, etc. However, it's a great source of reference for essays (this will apply mostly to Uni students I think) and it's nice to have your own copy so you can highlight and scribble on it.
