Having spent two weeks boating along the Shannon and overnighting near various pubs I was able to 'get into' the Ireland that was and still is in many parts. The good thing is that the English oppression of the 1500s to late 1900s has mostly passed into history. Some of the old songs relate to the bad old times but most relate to the good old days. The sad thing is that most of The Dubliners are now also history but this CD is a great introduction to Irish old songs story telling with 27 on this single CD, some which are missing from more recent (1990s) CDs. I am English, I did not like what I heard of the IRA but after some research it is very clear that it takes two to tango and the English tangoed in Ireland for 400 years. Maybe the chief English tangoer in the 1500s was 'Sir' Edward Waterhouse who retired back to England and lived and died in what is now our house in Kent. A great CD and maybe a starter for research into Irish history.Read full review
