Ursula le Guin wrote these books over a number of years, and they were published as individual stories, then as a trilogy which became a quartet. When I read to the end of the 4th book I was still left asking, 'What happens next?' and can only assume all her readers had the same sensation, some of them left waiting for many years. I had only to research on my computer to discover two more books had been written and ordered them immediately. Tales from Earthsea is the 5th book, with various short stories from different time-frames, and a longer one linking the 4th book to this one. The Other Wind is essentially the final book of Earthsea, resolving the threads of all that is raised elsewhere through the Cycle. They are all compelling reading. I feel myself changed, my attitudes and understanding subtly shifted through the reading of these. They are far from being books for children, though a perceptive child might love them. This is fantasy that deals with harsh reality with open eyes. Friends have recommended these books for years. It is like discovering Narnia or Curdie or Middleearth or the Time books of Madeleine L'Engle or the novels of Charles Williams - a compelling pleasure. So pick up Wizard of Earthsea and don't stop until you reach The Other Wind!Read full review
