Lee's is a Waitsian world of middle aged losers, musicians and the chronically mentally ill. They drunk, they drug, people die, people have delusions and emptiness. The first half is stronger and more lyrical than the second. I read this after a Zadie Smith novel which I found vague, overambitious and uninvolving. To my surprise, I liked this better. Lee is a national treasure as far as I can see. Go Schew.
