This got to be one of Marilyn's best roles. I did enjoy it, although the only entertaining part about 'The Prince and the showgirl' is i fact Marilyn.

Behind the glitter and glamour of this frothy romantic comedy darker feelings were stirring. The stars, Marilyn Monroe in one of her best, most successful roles, and England's then top actor, Laurence Olivier (who also directed), hated each other. He constantly carped about and criticised her performance and the last straw for an unhappy Marilyn came when Olivier asked her to "try and be sexy". She never forgave him. Meanwhile, despite the off-screen rows, the bickering stars produced a delightful comedy, full of colour and romance that is well worth a look.
I bought the DVD because I have previously seen it on TV and enjoyed it. It has a great cast with Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe in it and is set in England too, which makes it interesting to British viewers. Marilyn is wonderful in it, very sweet and acts really well. Besides Olivier's appalling mock Russian accent, the film is great and well worth watching.
Lawrence Olivier, our greatest ever stage and screen actor stars with Marilyn Monroe at her most innocent best in this class comedy, Both bring their unique talents to this almost fairy tale style film. I had recorded it fom the TV but now I am happy to have it as a dvd
Marilyn Monroe fan? Then this films a must! Never has she been shown to be more glamourous and funny. Balance that with Sir Lawrence Olivier's correctness and the austere stuffiness of the visiting foreign court members and you've got a winner. Her sheer beauty and naive charm breaks down all barriers and wins the hearts of even the most solemn courtiers. The costumes are excellent and the locations well chosen. This is a light and fluffy film and not one for the serious minded historian.
