Pre-dating Batman - and (you can check the facts) heavily borrowed from by the 'creators' of the original Batman of the late 30's - The Shadow is one of the original 30's 'super hero' genre from pulp fiction paperback and radio show material. The film does well in drawing on the look and feel of pre-WWII times with the main character employing 'agents' and a sort of ships piped messages communication with them and the evil foe employs henchmen just as bad guys used to :). The film is a lot better to watch on DVD (my previous version was VHS) and although no bonus material (which could have enhanced the package) has been included - there are no 'bells & whistles' - this omission does not detract at all from an excellent movie. I rate this film highly because of the care the film makers have lavished on the story and characters keeping it reasonably faithful to the feel of the original ,not bowing to the kitsch ,camp treatment some characters from this genre (unfairly) receive.
