Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler crime series is beautifully written and will engage the attention of readers of fiction who do not normally read crime novels. These are character driven stories of the highest quality. This, the 5th and latest in the series is up to scratch with a serial killer at large in the fictional cathedral town of Lafferton. You can read this book without having read the previous books in the series but I would suggest reading the first, "The Various Haunts of Men", before starting on the others.
Compelling storyline until the last few pages when everything conveniently seemed to come together. Very disappointed.

Latest in a series that could quite easily make it onto the TV. The characters are always a bit dysfunctional but more believable as a result. It is possible with Susan Hill to have a pretty good idea "who did it" from about half way but you can't be sure. An excellent read.
