This is an excellent book, well-worth the read. It brings together a wide range of sources (Thucydides to Xenophon, Herodotus to Plutarch) and casts a critical eye over them coming to conclusions which are not necessarily 'mainstream'. The book is very readable, so much so that I had to slow myself down deliberately to ensure I picked up all the points. I particularly liked the author's singling out certain Spartans (Generals and Kings) for particular attention. I would however, suggest that this is not a 'first reader' - Thucydides,Donald Kagan's books and lectures, or other such material, are an essential prerequisite to fully appreciating this book.
