Very disappointed after such a great first album, this second album by The Strokes just doesn't cut it. By the time we get to track 5 the group seems to have run out of ideas. Although I think reptilia is awesome I doubt I will listen to this album very often and I regret buying it.
I love this group and all their songs. Thats not normal in me, but this group was what I was looking for. It is a perfect group. Thanks, Mat.
After purchasing their first album around a month ago, i was eager to purchase the second Strokes installment and i am pleased to say that it was a great buy. The album tracks on this record are much better than 'Is This It' with 'Automatic Stop', 'Meet Me In The Bathroom' and 'The Way It Is' being the pick of the bunch. The album opens up great with 'What Ever Happened?' and 'Between Love and Hate' is also a decent track. On top of the good three released singles 'Reptilia', '12:51', and 'The End Has No End', there are 'Under Control', 'I Can't Win' and 'You Talk Way Too Much', these three are probably the only average songs on the album but are still very listenable when playing the record all the way through. Overall a great purchase for any Strokes fan or if you were like me just wanting to see what the Strokes were all about, this is a great follow up to Is This It. I shall be purchasing their third album 'First Impressions of Earth' very shortly!Read full review
First of all, I am an extremely huge Strokes fan, and would go as far as to say that they are quite possibly my favourite band. Julian Casablancas' voice is overly distinctive and refuses to be hidden behind the crash of a symbol, or a sweet guitar riff. The album 'Room On Fire', is one of their finest pieces of work and it includes well known tracks such as 'Reptilia' and '12:51'. Though the album actually came out in 2003 (In the UK it did, may differ elsewhere), the lyrics and music itself are still highly relevant to today's 'Indie/Alternative' scene. Synth sounds have been used in places, and strong guitar melody lines correlate with the current modern genre. The album's artwork is almost quite fascinating to look at, even though, simply put, there are just various blocks of colour and a few simple pictures. The pictures appear to be 'random' as, for example, there are playing card symbols, and two hands holding guns. However hidden meanings behind the lyrics could somehow possibly relate to the images on the front cover. I wouldn't say that the cover is colourful as it isn't bright and eye-catching necessarily, but if you were to look at it properly i find it to be really interesting, partly because of its simplicity, but also because, i feel that it somehow fits perfectly with the albums sound. If it were to be of gaudy design or were to have had a picture of the bad posing, i feel that what you would expect from it on your first time listening would be far from what it actually is. The lyric booklet opens out, is of simple design and is double sided; one side is light blue with lyrics and a picture of the band below, and on the other side the bands faces are in oval frames. I don't think that the simplistic way the album design that has been chosen reflects in anyway, the sheer brilliance of how special this album actually is; Each track is different from the next, each track brings with it awe stricken emotions upon listening, and lastly each track is great enough to be a favourite of any music listener with brilliant taste. My favourite Strokes song is 'Heart in a Cage', which appears on the album 'First Impressions Of The Earth' which is an incredible album, but similarly with 'Room On Fire' and 'Is This It' I find it near impossible to decide which is my favourite due to fact that they are all outstanding.Read full review
Bringing out a second album, with the aim to better your debut album seems an obvious thing to do... And that is exactly what The Strokes have attempted, and in Most ways succeeded. This album has the flair of "Is this it" (their debut album), with a little more thrown in just to be sure. The album is full of catchy riffs and rhythms, and the songs "12:51" and "reptilia" are great examples. I find that the only problem with this album (for myself atleast), is that at first, the songs seem similar. But after listening to the album a few times through this problem was fixed and I managed to see into the songs and see the musical talent that is, The Strokes. An album well worth the money, if you like this kind of music.
