As I read this book I constantly had the impression it was written by a teenage boy. The main problem is that the author shifts the register from erudite to banal, formal to colloquial..... with this being at best hilarious, but mostly just irritating. There are some wonderful lines in it, but their effect is often ruined by the sentence immediately following. I gave up eventually and switched to Stephen Donaldson, who is just a joy to read.
