My first Inspector Montalbano book and totally enjoyable. Montalbano makes Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus out as a totally one dimensional unlikeable character. Not that Montalbano is an angel. He is egotistical, driven to his work, with fractious relationships with almost all the characters he comes across, including the men and women working for him. One redemption is his love of food, another is his awareness of his own numerous faults, though nothing makes him want to change except in the very short term. The book has two main stories. A robbery and series of mafia killings including that of a friend and his own injury; and the 1943 murder of two young lovers discovered in a hidden cave fifty years later. The style is concise and focussed with the book being a continuous read without any need to skip read over long drawn out passages, and of such a length and interest as to be read in one reading. The style and focus reminds me of an updated version of the Italian Don Camillo books. Cannot wait for the next Montalbano book.Read full review
