A classic novellette, from the great Graham Greene. A study on though you can know somebody all your life, can you really know all about them. The book is told via the voice of the detective, whom investigates the case, but tells the story a ham western author Buck Dexter (real name Rollo Martins) in post war Vienna. An Englishman offered a job by friend Harry Limes, whom he finds to be dead on arrival, taking him into a world of racketeering and intrigue. This was written by Greene as a screenplay first, for the Orson Welles film, then the Author himself adapted it, to this short story. Also in the book is the second short story of The Fallen Idol (you may find it as The Basement Room too) about a young boy Phillipe, whose butler Baines is accused of murdering his horrid wife, in favour of the young maid.Read full review
