A thriller, a hilarious comic satire about an archetypal village police force, a surrealistic vision of eternity, the story of a tender, brief, unrequited love affair between a man and his bicycle, and a chilling fable of unending guilt, 'The Third Policeman' is comparable only to 'Alice in Wonderland' as an allegory of the absurd.

  • A creative nightmare

I am not sure whether to recommend this book .. It is very inventive, fantastic, exasperating, hysterical, unsettling, what I imagine hell could be ! It is a philosophical dissertation about death, dreams, nightmares. Very modern in thought, yet it was written in 1940, one of these writers that he will always be ahead of his time. You could compare it in many ways to writers like Kafka,Borges,Joyce. Surreal, often irracional. You may want to stop reading the book at times, but the brilliant language , with thoughts of death, dreams, nightmares will either repelled or hypnotized you. they are central sections of the story more difficult to read and more repetitive but I found that I could only leave it for a day but want it to continue and I was all the time intrigue as to how the story would develop, I am, after a few days, still thinking about the possibilities of the end of the story. They are passages with descriptions and concerns about clouds, wind, rain, fields and the human psyche. It comes to mind Oscar Wilde when he says ' Life is a dream that keeps me from sleeping '

I bought it as a gift for my son, who enjoys authors like Richard Brautican - not sure how he feels about this one yet.
