I bought this book as I had been assigned to read it for contextual gothic reading for english lit A level. It is a good ghost story which is in places very gripping and genuinely scary. However the main character was very frustrating as the narrator and a weak male character, alomost too much so for my taste. In places it seemed a bit overdone and stole a lot of ideas from other gothic novels I had read. At times it was also difficult to determine what time period it was set in, and this made establishing what would have been common knowledge at the time/historical context. Overall worthwhile reading but not particularly original or elaborate in terms of plot and character development. It was quite simple and easy to read.
I enjoyed this book, it is rather simplistic but it had a good twist at the end. There are quite a few other books of this type, by the author, so I will read more and hope that her imagination got better and better. There is a film of this book and I hope I get to see it.
