This box set is the penultimate series of the legendary - The X-Files. This series has highs and lows and pulls together elements of the earlier series. There are the usual freaks and monster episodes running along side the darker mythology episodes so there's something for everyone. An entertaining and thrilling watch for any sci-fi fan.
Season 8 faced a unique challenge; could the show go on without the abducted Fox Mulder, the true believer? Mulder remained a background pressence throughout season eight, replaced in the foreground by Agent John Doggett (Robert Patrick), a hard-facts man who clashed with Scully, who is now a full-fledged believer after years of hanging out with the better half. Gillian Anderson consistantly delivers excellent performances and the unexpected union of X-Files newbie Robert Patrick who also proved to be a worthy addition to the cast. Agent John Doggett has his own share of personal strife's and woe's as we find out that his young son was violently murdered and the crime remains unsolved. Much of the shows mytharc seemingly disappears, but Doggett's skepticism and Scully's passionate vision keeps the season alove. Even Assistant Director Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) seems to develop a more cruitial role and chemistry with the duo and their search for answers. The two part season finale, "Essence" and "Existance" mirrored some aspects of the "virgin birth" scenario, with Scully portraying Mary, a returned and recovered Mulder as Joseph and the Lone Gunmen as the three wise men. The series also reinvented the mytharc in time to treat viewers to the return - and death - of the so-bad-he's-good villan Alex Krychek, and left us with a new addition to the cast, Annabeth Gish, as Special Agent Monica Reyes. The final scene of "Existence" offers viewers a family portrait , baby William (whose biological paternity remains an X-file of its own) and the moment which every avid fan has been waiting for, Mulder and Scully declaring their love for one another and sealing it with "That Kiss". On the heels of this scene came the news that David Duchovny would not be reprising his role as Fox Mulder again, so it seemed the ninth season, like the eighth, would once again begin with an unanswered question; in this case how will Mulder's permanent absence be explained after the tender scence of domesticity?Read full review
