Gritty tale of corruption in local government and the metal bashing industry of railcar manufacture. An unusual setting but well done. The acting is OK but nothing outstanding, the dialogue is relatively pedestrian, with the ending as foreseen as normal to most current Hollywood films. Good for a wet winter watch which will not strain the brain cells.
Great acting, directing and storyline. Give it a viewing, what can you lose. Better than watching TV.

The Yards is simply one of those classic movies rare to find these days. Unfortunately it hasn't achieved much success, and that's a crying shame. I really can't see why, because it's got everything that makes a movie good (Great acting, a great cast, and a well-developed storyline). This is one of those films I need to see again just for the pleasure of it. Nothing else to say, simply watch it whenever you have the chance. You won't be disappointed.
It's not going stand the test of time to be honest. There are a lot of actors in this film (Theron, Dunaway, Burstyn) who are merely for show and as good as they are, the film would have benefitted more if it had remained with the story between Wahlberg's Leo and Phoenix's Willie. At its heart, the film is about a young man (Wahlberg) released from prison who tries to go straight but ends up being led astray by childhood friends (who, incidentally, were responsible for getting him into trouble in the first place) as he tries to make money and take care of his ailing mother. There are some interesting subplots actually but nothing is ever really explored satisfactorily and to be honest, in order to enjoy this film I think it helps if you have a vested interest in one of the lead actors.
