"Top Gear" shifts DVDs from the shelves in their thousands, so with the success of compilation DVDs "Challenges Volume 1" and "Challenges Volume 2" it was almost a foregone conclusion that "Volume 3" would hit the shelves before long, and since the new series is about to hit our screens again next week there will soon be a whole new raft of material for a "Volume 4". No doubt petrolheads are rejoicing everywhere, not least when they see that this is a 2-disc release. I was concerned for a while that this might be a return to the bad old days of discs that you had to get up and eject half-way through, which as Mr Clarkson himself might say, is a bit rubbish. Thankfully though, the "challenges" themselves (all eight of them - dead on three hours running time) have been fitted onto one disc, which begs the question of why there is a second disc in the package - the answer to that is this disc contains the extra features - almost another hour of material. It does beg the question of why the main disc is so full and the 2nd disc is, comparatively speaking, so empty (let's be honest, they could have put a lot more on there) but at least they've not jacked up the price to justify the extra disc, because quite honestly, it's not worth it. I half-expected the makers of the DVD to cut the bits from the "Lorry Challenge" when Jeremy got in trouble for joking about 'lorryists' murdering prostitutes, but surprisingly, these lines were intact. Certainly, some things were missing or music changed due to rights issues (else there wouldn't be the words 'for clearance reasons certain edits have been made') on the disc, which puts the content somewhere between BBC3 repeats (complete and unedited) and Dave repeats (hacked to bits). I'm not really enough of a fan to be able to tell you what is missing and what has been changed, though I didn't spot anything major this time around, compared to earlier discs. The extras are good, but there aren't really enough of them to justify the second disc. A couple of scenes from the 2008 series have been extended (a 'Cool Wall' bit plus an interview with London mayor Boris Johnson), while 'Spitfire Magic' is a section that should have been included with the 'Top Gear vs The Germans' challenge with about three and a half minutes of footage of the boys flying in Spitfires on their way to Belgium. Jeremy bangs on about how brilliant and 'epic' it is, but its easy for the viewer to see why this piece of indulgence never made it into the final cut of the episode. The extended "2008 Top Gear Awards" section does at least answer the question to one piece of continuity as to why star-in-a-reasonably-priced-car leader Jay Kay came on set carrying a large bag. It was the Christmas episode, and he had inside a pile of 'presents' for each presenter. Also in this section, as un-PC as ever, Jeremy gives an award for the 'best pair of breasts in the studio'. It's a shame actually that the camera didn't linger on them for long enough, but their owner did seem to be a worthy winner! Finally, there is some 'Stig-Cam' footage from inside the dashboard as the shows tame racing driver takes a couple of cars around the track for a power lap, which is a good a reason as any to see what the view looks like from the driver's seat! Next Sunday is Fathers Day, and I can see this being a very popular present. Yes, there's not much here you haven't seen on Dave countless times already, but it's still a pretty cool present!Read full review

I have bought this DVD as a gift for my son for Christmas as he is a die hard Top Gear fan!!! He has all the Top Gear DVDs now and loves them!!! Apparently this DVD is brilliant - although I can not vouch for that myself as I don't like Top Gear, but if you have a Top Gear fan then tis is a DVD I would definatly recommend - or if you are concidering this DVD as a gift then it is a good bet - especially if you want an hour of peace and quiet!!!
Spot on, the boys are right on form. If you are 36 (12) and love a laugh, you are going to love this DVD. the second disc is something that I have been waiting for Top Gear to do for a while. Even if you pay over the odds, you WILL be happy! 10/10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
