As an aspiring writer, I had read 'Bird by Bird'by Anne Lamott on the advice of a writing website and found it inspiring about writing and about life. This is Anne Lamott's strength, I think, she presents a realistic way of looking at life with humour and affection and ignores all the trappings that mask our true selves. Travelling Mercies is a wry, poignant and honest look at how we live our lives and with gentleness and humour Anne nudges us into being true to our own selves and not apologetic for who we are. The ultimate message is that we should care for and support each other by 'turning up' and being there. It is a lovely glimpse of her life and makes us look at our own. Our weaknesses are portrayed as being just as valid as our strengths and although there is a vein of religious faith running all through it, this book does not bang an evangelistic drum. It is plain, good sense and very funny. I loved it.Read full review
