There's something to be said for shooting on film. While video is cheaper and easier, there's a quality that film can bring to a micro budget feature that gives it that special little something extra. Tyler Tharpe uses that to his advantage, crafting a strong thriller the first time out of the gate with his feature Freak. A young woman and her little sister (Paliganoff and Johnson) pack up and drive across the Midwest, unknowingly on a collision course with a hospital intern (Patton) transporting a homicidal maniac. Before long the maniac is loose, and his killing spree leads right to the sisters. It's a pretty typical set up for a horror movie, owing quite a bit to Halloween in its execution (so to speak). The Freak in the title is set up well (he murders his own mother in the opening minutes - as a child), and remains silent for the running time. Tharpe knows that less is more when it comes to scares, and the minimal sets and lack of blood adds quite a bit to the tension that builds as the story moves along. While the micro budget shows its seams at times (especially with the van the Freak is transported in - a bit more Rent-A-Wreck than hospital issue), having been shot on film adds that intangible quality that helps bump it up amongst the latest in the horror genre. If you're looking for extreme gore and lots of blood though, you'll have to look elsewhere. Tension and actual scares are the goal here, and Tharpe accomplishes that more than a few times. While Freak doesn't break any new ground, it is a solid little thriller that shows that with a good script, strong actors, and a good eye, horror doesn't need to break the bank to be good.Read full review
I rate this excellent only for fans of the Yankovic/Airplane/Naked Gun/Kentucky Fried Movie flavour of humour. To everyone else I'd rate it average to good. I saw this movie on TV about 15 years ago, liked it, and had never seen it since so it was great to see it available now on DVD. It's not the kind of title that you tend to see in the high street shops and I don't think I would have paid full price for it anyway. So, to find it on eBay for a third of the price was a real bargain. Anyway, it is one of those daft movies for watching when you are in a daft mood for daft humour!. There's plenty of Yankovic's typical parodies (or songs and movies) during his dream sequences or in the fake adverts. What is the movie about? Well, basically, Yankovic and pall loose their jobs at the burger bar and a relative's husband wins a failing local TV station in a poker game. Yankovic gets the job of running the station. Yankovic manages, by accident, to make the TV station a sucess, beating the major network in the ratings. Yankovic has to raise a ton of money in order to stop the owner from selling it to the Network. A good one to get from the bargain bin for a fiver. A must for wacky Zucker Brothers style of humour.Read full review
This is a film from my childhood. the movie spoof sketches are great....if you havent seen it and love slapstick comedy with a really big budget on visual effects then UHF is a must......not a film if you like depth n thought because typical weard al style is just in your face stupid (like an early jim carry with a hint of cheese). if your looking for a light hearted film that somehow sqeezes in a plot and touches on naked gun style humour then hear is your movie and at this price makes a great crimbo prezzie...........ENJOY IT
