A great book for the history of the ukulele. It's obviously not a comprehensive history as the ukulele seems to be becoming more popular each day but it's a really good starting point. For a potted history you could listen to Fairport Convention's Ukulele Central and you won't forget that in 1879 the Ravenscrag landed in Honolulu but by reading Ian's book you will know that the 'little guitar' came from Portugal or at least Madeira - not Spain which rhymes with again. It is well-written, easy to read, and moves quickly from hero to hero (heroines too). If you want to know about the prominent ukulele players of the last 130 years then this is the book for you.
This is an excellent book and highly recommended It tells the fascinating history/development of the instrument from its earliest days. The manufacturers who made the various models and the lives of the players who helped to popularise them, both in America and the UK. Lots of interesting photographs . Mr Whitcomb is an excellent teller of the ukelele's story and as I say I cannot recommend this little book highly enough.
